Welcome to the first edition of Throwback Thursday, ICSI Edition. Over the coming weeks, we'll be posting pictures from our archives each Thursday. We start it off with a photo taken in our early years from the roof of our building at 1947 Center in Berkeley:
Damian Borth is visiting ICSI’s Audio and Multimedia team on a postdoctoral fellowship within ICSI's German visiting agreement, which is funded through the FITweltweit program, sponsored by the BMBF and administered by the DAAD, the German Academic Exchange Program.
He first visited California during a student exchange stay at UC Santa Barbara while working toward his degree in engineering, which he received in Germany in 2003. After working in Taiwan for a couple of years, he returned to Germany to study computer science.
Björn Fritsche is visiting FrameNet for six months on a fellowship through the DAAD FITworldwide program, which also funds our German visiting agreement. He is a PhD candidate at the Heinrich-Heine University in Dusseldorf.
Grad student Elior Rahmani is visiting ICSI, working with Eran Halperin of Research Initiatives’ bioinformatics team. Eran splits his time between ICSI and Tel Aviv, where he advises Elior. Elior recently received his bachelor’s degree from Tel Aviv University in Computer science and Biology (Bioinformatics); he began his master’s degree studies recently.
Xiaoyong Wei, an associate professor at Sichuan University in China, has joined Audio and Multimedia for a year. Xiaoyong’s research works toward systems that can analyze visual information in videos and respond to search queries about their content. His group’s goal is to build reasoning systems that parallel the ways humans think about the world in order to take a query submitted by a user, understand it by matching it to a keyword that the video search system recognizes, and respond to the query with videos that match.

Charles J. Fillmore, one of the world’s greatest linguists — ever — died last Thursday, February 13, at the age of 84 in San Francisco. He was the discoverer of frame semantics, who did the essential research on the nature of framing in thought and language. He discovered that we think, largely unconsciously, in terms of conceptual frames — mental structures that organize our thought. Further, he found that every word is mentally defined in terms of frame structures.
On October 22, Audio and Multimedia researchers presented a system that analyzes audio recordings and identifies their “scenes” – descriptions of where or in what circumstances they were recorded, such as a supermarket and a restaurant – at the IEEE Workshop on Applications of Signal Processing to Audio and Acoustics in New Paltz, New York.
Barath Raghavan, who was at ICSI from 2010 to 2012, has rejoined ICSI's Networking and Security team to work with Scott Shenker, ICSI's chief scientist, director of Research Initiatives, Networking and Security researcher, and UC Berkeley professor. In his first tenure here, Barath's research focused on Internet architecture, but this time he will work on problems related to software-defined networking (SDN).
