The Socratic Paradigm prescribes that we should re-examine every assumption and every decision made in the development of our pattern recognition systems. This talk discusses some of the implications of this paradigm in a world in which there is a virtually unlimited amount of data. In particular, it is recommended that development testing be based on an unbounded quantity of data, and that a large number of tests of statistical significance be formulated to validate the elements of the system design to the most minute detail. The proposed methodologies do not require that either the training data or the development data be manually labeled or verified.
