Researchers Gather to Discuss Non-English Framenets

More than 30 people from around the world traveled to Berkeley on April 19 to take part in the International FrameNet Workshop, sponsored by Swedish FrameNet++. Attendees from Brazil, Germany, Japan, and Sweden discussed their experiences developing non-English framenets, machine-readable lexicons based on the original English FrameNet, which is housed at ICSI. Representatives from Carnegie Mellon University, Columbia University, and Google also attended.

AI Director Srini Narayanan and Alum Joseph Makin Win Best Paper Award at BICoB

ICSI Alum Joseph Makin and Artificial Intelligence Director Srini Narayanan won the best paper award at the International Conference on Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, held in March. Their conference paper presents a model of the complete human blood clotting cascade along with a sensitivity analysis covering both discrete and continuous dynamics of the blood-clotting process.

Networking and Security Director Vern Paxson Receives EECS Teaching Award

Networking and Security Director Vern Paxson has received the Diane S. McEntyre Award for Excellence in Teaching from UC Berkeley's Computer Science Division. The award, which is given annually to a member of the computer science faculty, recognizes commitment to and respect for students.

Board Member Receives IJCAI Donald E. Walker Distinguished Service Award

Professor Wolfgang Wahlster, a member of the ICSI Board of Trustees, is the recipient of the 2013 IJCAI Donald E. Walker Distinguished Service Award for his substantial contributions and his extensive service to the field of artificial intelligence throughout his career. The award will be presented during the opening ceremony of the 23rd International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Beijing, China in August.

ICSI Launches Two New Groups for Audio/Multimedia and Research Initiatives in Computer Science

ICSI, a leading center for research in computer science affiliated with UC Berkeley, today announced that it is launching two research groups, one for audio and multimedia and one for research initiatives. The Audio and Multimedia Research Group is led by Dr. Gerald Friedland, while the Research Initiatives Group is led by Professor Scott Shenker, also ICSI’s chief scientist.

Vern Paxson Is New Director of Networking and Security

ICSI is pleased to announce that, as of January 1, 2013, Professor Vern Paxson is the director of Networking and Security research. Paxson was previously a senior researcher in Networking. He takes the role of director over from Professor Scott Shenker, who directs the recently established Research Initiatives area and serves as chief scientist. Networking and Security research scientists will conduct research on Internet security issues, including investigating the underground economy.

Steven Wegmann Is New Leader of Speech Group

ICSI is pleased to announce that, as of January 1, 2013, Steven Wegmann is the new leader of the ICSI Speech Group. Professor Nelson Morgan, the founder and leader of the group for more than 24 years, will be focusing on research activities, passing on the leadership of the team to Wegmann.

“Morgan has led this group for 24 years and it's in great shape,” Wegmann said. “I'm honored to take on this role and excited about the research that we as a group are undertaking.”

Interactive Graph of Relationships Between Root and Intermediate Certificate Authorities Is Released, Featured on SlashDot

An interactive graph created by DAAD postdoctoral fellow Johanna Amann shows the relationships between root and intermediate certificate authorities (CAs) of institutions around the world. The graph was featured on SlashDot. Amann extracted from each certificate chain the path of intermediate CAs up to the root and then merged all paths into a graph. Amann works in the Networking and Security Group.

ICSI Leads Team Researching Ways to Build Speech Recognition Systems for New Languages Under Severe Data and Time Constraints

ICSI is leading a research team under the IARPA Babel Program that is focused on building speech recognition solutions with self-imposed time and data limitations for a variety of languages. The work aims to better understand fundamental challenges and discover new methods for development of speech models for languages that could emerge as important in the future.

Networking Researcher Sylvia Ratnasamy Receives Yahoo! ACE Award

Sylvia Ratnasamy has received a Yahoo! Academic Career Enhancement (ACE) Award for the 2012-2013 academic year. Ratnasamy is a researcher in the Networking and Security Group and an assistant professor at UC Berkeley. Her research focuses on the design and implementation of networked systems.
