Usable Security and Privacy Researchers Win Three Awards at CHI 2016

Usable security and privacy researchers at ICSI received three awards for papers they submitted to CHI 2016. Along with their collaborators, Serge Egelman and postdoctoral researcher Marian Harbach wrote and submitted three papers to the conference, and all received awards.

ICSI Adopts New Leadership Model

ICSI has adopted a new leadership model: Maria Eugenia Quintana is now the Institute’s Executive Director.  She, in conjunction with Chief Scientist Scott Shenker form a leadership council that includes Prof. Michael Mahoney, Controller Sharon Parker, and Prof. Vern Paxson.  Our previous Director Deborah Crawford is now the Vice President of Research at George Mason University.

Researchers Find Large Gaps in Email Security

Researchers at The University of Sydney (Australia), ICSI (USA), Data61 (Australia), and the Technical University of Munich (Germany) have found that while email sent between users of major providers is relatively secure, email sent by other providers is poorly protected in transit, with weaknesses in cryptographic setups and authentication.

John Ohala Wins ASA Silver Medal in Speech

​John Ohala, a distinguished scholar in the Speech Group, has received the Silver Medal in Speech Communication from the Acoustical Society of America, or ASA. In announcing the award, the ASA cited Ohala’s work in advancing the understanding of speech production and perception, and applying phonetic principles to the study of spoken language change over time. Ohala is an emeritus professor at UC Berkeley, which he joined in 1970 as a professor of linguistics.
